How cash runway is calculated
Net monthly burn = cash paid out − cash received. When burn is positive, runway in months = available cash ÷ net monthly burn.
If receipts meet or exceed payments, this simple model has no depletion date. That does not remove the need to check payment timing, one-off bills, seasonal changes or money reserved for other commitments.
Worked example
With £12,000 available, £3,000 received each month and £5,000 paid out, the monthly shortfall is £2,000. The cash covers six similar months. An extra £3,000 one-off bill would reduce available cash to £9,000 and runway to 4.5 months.
Cash and profit answer different questions
An unpaid invoice can contribute to an accrual-based profit figure without adding cash to the bank. Loans, owner transfers and equipment purchases can also make cash movement differ from profit. Review your statement and commitments when entering the cash figures.
Common questions
What happens if there is no monthly shortfall?
The calculator shows no depletion date under the entered assumptions. It does not display an infinite number of months or predict future receipts.
Should unpaid customer invoices be included in cash received?
No. Use cash actually received, or an explicitly planned cash scenario. An unpaid invoice is not available cash.
