Add or remove VAT

To add VAT: VAT = net × rate ÷ 100, and gross = net + VAT. To remove VAT: net = gross ÷ (1 + rate ÷ 100), and VAT = gross − net.

Removing 20% VAT is a division by 1.2, not a 20% discount. The calculator rounds the net and VAT components to two decimal places and keeps the displayed components equal to the displayed gross total.

Worked example

Adding 20% VAT to £100 gives £20 VAT and a £120 gross total. Removing 20% VAT from £120 gives £100 net and £20 VAT. At a 0% rate, net and gross are equal.

Use a consistent basis in your records

Keep the invoice showing the supplier's net, tax and gross amounts. Whether VAT can be reclaimed depends on the transaction and your registration. A rate calculation does not decide registration, exemptions or reclaim eligibility.

Common questions

Can I use a different VAT rate?

Yes. Replace the example rate with a value from 0 to 100, including decimals. Check the applicable rate for your country and transaction.

Does changing the currency convert the price?

No. The currency selector labels the amounts. Use one currency for the calculation; it does not fetch exchange rates.
